Handgun Purchase Permits

*Applicant must be a citizen, a naturalized citizen or a resident alien*

*Resident Aliens should bring resident alien card, social security card and NC driver's license or NC ID card. Naturalized Citizens should bring Naturalization Certificate or valid US Passport.

1.  Applicant must be twenty-one (21) years of age to purchase from a Federally Licensed Firearms Dealer.
2.  Must be a resident of Henderson County
3.  List ALL previous addresses to the best of your knowledge;  Cities and States will suffice if you do not recall street addresses. (May be listed on a sheet of paper and turned in with the Release form mentioned in item #6 below.)
4.  Must provide a valid driver's license or other picture ID with current address provided by the state of NC
5. Must provide a completed and notarized AOC-SP-917 release form with application AOC-SP-917 Form **** APPLICATIONS CANNOT BE PROCESSED WITHOUT THIS FORM****
6. The NOTARIZED FORM  can either be dropped off or mailed to:

7. A criminal background check will be performed before granting of permit, as required by law.

Applications are accepted and processed Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm.

Permit to purchase a handgun is valid for a period of five (5) years from date of issue.

Please allow fourteen (14) days for processing of application and criminal background check.

Learning the laws regulating the use of firearms is a must for responsible ownership. Local regulations differ and laws vary from state to state. Citizens must check with the jurisdiction where the gun is to be used. In North Carolina, permits to buy handguns can be obtained from the county sheriff. 

The online application will incur an additional $3.00 convenience fee that is assessed by the third party software vendor. (Please note that this convenience fee is not collected by the Sheriff's Office and is not required for a handgun purchase permit application but is being offered as an added convenience.) Anyone wishing to apply for a handgun purchase permit may come into the Sheriff's Office to provide the required information. 

Guns must be carried in plain view. Guns must not be carried in a pocket, purse, under a car seat or in any other concealed manner unless you have a concealed handgun permit.
